Drifting looks like one dramatic move and is actually a sequence: break traction, hold the angle, then recover. Get any of the three wrong and you either spin or straighten out early. The good news is that arcade physics is forgiving enough to learn the sequence properly, which is more than can be said for a real handbrake turn.
In a driving game, grip is usually modelled as how quickly sideways velocity gets cancelled out. Your car is moving in one direction and pointing in another; grip pulls those two back into line. High grip means they realign almost instantly, which is what makes a car feel planted.
Pulling the handbrake drops that number dramatically — in Madalin Stunt Cars it falls to roughly a fifth of normal. The car keeps its momentum in the old direction while the nose rotates freely. That gap between where you are pointing and where you are travelling is the drift angle.
You do not steer a drift with the wheel alone. You steer it with the balance between how fast the nose is rotating and how fast grip is pulling it back.
Throttle stays on through all of it. Lifting off mid-drift kills the slide and puts you facing the wrong way.
Two cues tell you what the car is doing. The first is the smoke — it only appears once sideways speed passes a threshold, so smoke means you are actually drifting rather than just turning hard. The second is the camera, which lags slightly behind the car's rotation and gives you a feel for how fast the back end is coming around.
If smoke stops before you want it to, you released the handbrake too early or the grip has already caught up. If the car keeps rotating past ninety degrees, you held on too long.
Counter-intuitively, do not start with the drift car. Phantom has the lowest grip in the game, which means it slides on its own and gives you very little margin between a controlled drift and a spin. It rewards drivers who already have the timing.
Learn on Kestrel instead. Its high grip means the car naturally wants to straighten out, so mistakes correct themselves and you get a clear feel for how much handbrake is enough. Once the sequence is automatic, move to Phantom and everything gets longer and smokier.
In a stunt arena, drifting is not about lap times. It is about arriving at the next ramp pointed the right way without losing speed to a slow turn. The tight transition between the loop exit and the quarter pipes is the clearest example — a drift through that corner keeps you above 150 km/h where a normal turn drops you to 90.
It is also the quickest way to reset after a bad landing. If you come down facing the wrong way, a handbrake pivot turns the car in about half the distance of a three-point turn, and you keep whatever momentum you had.
Pick the open flat ground on the south side of the arena, get up to about 120 km/h, and drift a circle. Try to hold the same radius for a full lap without lifting off the throttle. When you can do that in both directions, take it to the corners. The whole skill is in the release, and circles are the fastest way to teach your hands where the release point is.
Reading about the loop is not the same as arriving at it at 190 km/h.
